Vaisigano Bridge
Civil
Vaisigano bridge is significant junction within Samoa’s civil infrastructure as it
connects the east coast to the central township. With increased tropical cyclones and
flooding, the previous bridge was deemed unsafe and JICA funded the construction
of a contemporary fit for purpose bridge. The bridge is a 75m three span PC
interconnected hollow slab bridge with an estimated 40m depth design to last 100
years. The bridge is 1.5m higher than the previous bridge for greater resilience.
CaBella was engaged by Konoike Construction to complete precast concrete work
on a offsite facility for quality control and accuracy, in-situ placement of concrete
elements and pillar and abutment construction.
Other challenges included piling down 40m whilst reducing the amount of water, the
site being located at the bottom of a valley which is prone to significant water flows.
The successful completion of this project has transformed the Vaisigano area and
provided Samoa with a more resilient high-quality investment to combat the impacts
of Climate Change.
